My latest selfie for 2017:
I’m quite a goofball, something I had tried in the past to not let be part of me. But as fate would have it, that’s the way I was born, the way I had grown up, and will be that way for the rest of my life. So I’ve come to the point of the crossroads that this is how I am, and this is what I have to live with, and so I have let go any efforts to try to act straight and just be a wack job that I am. And it’s nothing to be ashamed of, each and every one of us were made and born as unique individuals, as God intended, not to be same monotonous zombies as society constantly strives to form us into.
I had bit of a fun with this piece. I had originally planned to paint it in acrylic after washing down the wood with some watercolor, but then pastel came into my hands, and I liked how the pastel creates an interesting textural effect on the wood surface, and it’s easier to manipulate than acrylic. The texts you see are actual titles of some popular songs, two of them “Poker Face” and “Born This Way” belonging to the shock queen Lady Gaga. I think in some ways she and I share the same weirdness. “Basket Case” is from Green Day, and the last one is modified from the real title “Baby What I Say” by the King of Rock Elvis Presley. It was kind of funny how putting these titles together like this actually sums up my overall being. Ive also included a video of the process:
And while on the topic of selfies, I’ve decided to put together some selfie pics I have done from when I first started my artistic journey in 2013 up to now. I thought it would be interesting to see how my art has progressed over the past four years by comparing the selfies in different styles.
Of course there will be more selfies in the future, as I said I plan to make at least one every year based with different techniques and styles at my discretion.
