Charcoal, pastel,
ink on Bristol

This is actually based on
the Bible story in the book of Genesis about the people trying to
build a tower high enough to reach the heavens, more for their own
selfish gain than for God; to stop them He put a spell on their
tongues so that everyone is talking to each other in different
languages and confusing the hell out of each other that they
couldn’t continue on with the tower. Hence the name ‘Babel’ which
also meant ‘confusion.’ Even in a non-religious context you can
read the story of Babel as one’s struggle to reach the top by every
means he can find (good works, morality, religion) but they are
still not enough. In fact it’s not really the way at all. For as it
says in Ephesians 2:8-9

“for it is by grace we
were saved, and not of works for it is a gift of God so that no one
should boast.”

But sadly most of us don’t seem
to comprehend. We as arrogant and self-righteous beings are too
absorbed in our selfish need to be the best strive aimlessly to
build that tower as high and mighty as possible trying to beat one
another til someone reaches that coveted goal and claim the prize.
And in the process we fail to truly live as God intended us to,
with joy.
